About Kriya yoga

Babaji's Kriya Yoga is a scientific art of perfect God Truth union and Self-Realization. It was revived by a great Master of India, Babaji Nagaraj, as a synthesis of ancient teachings of the 18 Siddha tradition. It includes a series of techniques or "Kriyas" grouped into five phases or branches.

Kriya Hatha Yoga: including "asanas," physical postures of relaxation, "bandahs," muscular locks, and "mudras," psycho-physical gestures, all of which bring about greater health, peace and the awakening of the principal energy channels, “the nadis”, and centers, the "chakras." Babaji has selected a particularly effective series of 18 postures, which are taught in stages and in pairs. One cares for the physical body not for its own sake but as a vehicle or temple of the Divine.

Kriya Kundalini Pranayama: is a powerful breathing technique to awaken one’s potential power and consciousness and to circulate it through the seven principal chakras between the base of the spine and the crown of the head. It awakens the latent faculties associated with the seven chakras and makes one a dynamo on all five planes of existence.

Kriya Dhyana Yoga: is a progressive series of meditation techniques to learn the scientific art of mastering the mind - to cleanse the subconscious, to develop concentration, mental clarity and vision, to awaken the intellectual, intuitive and creative faculties, and to bring about the breathless state of communion with God, "Samadhi" and Self-Realization.

Kriya Mantra Yoga: the silent mental repetition of subtle sounds to awaken the intuition, the intellect and the chakras; the mantra becomes a substitute for the "I" - centered mental chatter and facilitates the accumulation of great amounts of energy. The mantra also cleanses habitual subconscious tendencies.

Kriya Bhakti Yoga: the cultivation of the soul’s aspiration for the Divine. It includes devotional activities and service to awaken unconditional love and spiritual bliss; it includes chanting and singing, ceremonies, pilgrimages, and worship. Gradually, all of one's activities become soaked with sweetness, as the "Beloved" is perceived in all

How can Kriya Yoga help and benefit ?

Babaji's Kriya Yoga is taught in a series of initiation seminars. It consists of a progressive series of Kriya Yoga techniques which bring about an integrated development of the individual. The rich variety of techniques brings about a complete transformation of the sincere practitioner. Among its benefits are physical healing and increased levels of energy, balancing of the emotions, mental calm, increased concentration, inspiration, wisdom and spiritual Self-realization. It includes a daily Yoga practice of various Kriyas, or techniques, which not only provide great strength, stability and peace, but also makes one dynamic and visionary. It brings balance and tranquility to the body and mind by reducing both restlessness and inertia. It is appropriate for all those who wish to transform themselves in the body, mind and spirit. It is for anyone who is searching to establish an open pathway towards their soul. It is for anyone who seeks discover how in the words of Jesus, the Kingdom of Heaven is accessible here on Earth. It is for anyone who wants to have more joy and happiness in their life and in their relationship with others. It is effective for one and all, regardless of their cultural, social or religious affiliation, age, sex or previous experience.

Kriya Yoga views life as series synchronistic events, pleasurable and problematic, unfolding at the right time and place. The techniques of Kriya Yoga, including Kriya Yoga asanas (physical postures), Kriya pranayama breathing, Kriya mantra (sacred sound syllables) and Kriya meditation work integrally to raise one's consciousness and energetic level. This allows one to view both kinds of events as opportunities for growth and for lessons learned.

Kriya Yoga is a physical, vital, mental, intellectual and spiritual sadhana, or discipline, in which one remembers one's true Self, the pure Witness consciousness, and lets go of the false egoistic identification with the body and mental movements. It grants more control over one's life. Interestingly enough, as self control is gained, one feels oneself to be less and less “the doer” and so one begins to accept and enjoy of life as it unfolds. Kriya Yoga develops trust, gratitude and devotion for God's Presence in one's life. One begins to meditate on God, and speak to God, as his or her truest and closest Friend, and begins to hear His response.

Greater mental clarity and focus is achieved through Kriya Yoga, and it is easier to act consistently in the right and best way both for oneself and for others. With this clarity and heightened intellectual strength, one’s consciousness expands and one accomplishes more with less energy, accepting less credit for the work done, and with more gratitude for the Supreme Doer in our life.

Kriya Yoga techniques strengthen our intuition and our power of healing. Our immune system is strengthened and we enjoy vibrant health, a strong nervous system, more energy, and a relaxed, peaceful demeanor.

The integral alignment of body, mind, and spirit gained through the practice of Kriya Yoga awakens our potential power and consciousness, known as “kundalini.” The level of our consciousness determines the nature and quality of the life we live. We must develop an advanced spiritual consciousness, which opens the mind to other dimensions of existence. Only then can we use that consciousness in the activities of our life to positively affect the world and those around us.

Traditional legends about Mahavatar Babaji

Legendary powers and age have been attributed to Mahavatar Babaji by the disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya. These stories have led many to believe that Mahavatar Babaji is a legendary person, rather than a real sadhu that was seen by numerous witnesses from 1861 to 1935.
Paramhansa Yogananda, in his Autobiography, described Mahavatar Babaji’s role on earth:
The Mahavatar is in constant communion with Christ; together they send out vibrations of redemption, and have planned the spiritual technique of salvation for this age. The work of these two fully-illumined masters–one with the body, and one without it–is to inspire the nations to forsake suicidal wars, race hatreds, religious sectarianism, and the boomerang-evils of materialism. Babaji is well aware of the trend of modern times, especially of the influence and complexities of Western civilization, and realizes the necessity of spreading the self-liberations of yoga equally in the West and in the East.
In addition, Babaji is reputed to be ageless, according to some accounts, and about 500 years old around the late 1800's, according to Swami Pranabananda.Yogananda reports that, according to the disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, nobody knows Babaji’s age, family, place of birth, true name, or other details “dear to the annalist’s heart.”
According to Yogananda's Autobiography, he has a sister called Mataji (meaning "Holy Mother") who also has lived throughout the centuries. Her level of spiritual attainment is comparable to her brother's, and she lives in a state of spiritual ecstasy in an underground cave. Although only three pages in the book are dedicated to her, she is described by Ram Gopal as "young and surpassingly lovely" as well as a "glorious woman."

Meetings with Mahavatar Babaji , 1861-1966

Lahiri Mahasaya

The first reported encounter with Mahavatar Babaji was in 1861, when Lahiri Mahasaya was posted to Ranikhet in his work as an accountant for the British government. One day while walking in the hills of Dunagiri above Ranikhet, he heard a voice calling his name. Following the voice up the mountain, he met a “tall, divinely radiant sadhu.” He was amazed to find that the sadhu knew his name. This sadhu was Mahavatar Babaji.
Mahavatar Babaji told Lahiri Mahasaya that he was his guru from the past, then initiated him into Kriya Yoga and instructed Lahiri to initiate others. Lahiri wanted to remain with Mahavatar Babaji, who told him instead that he must return to the world to teach Kriya Yoga and that “Kriya Yoga sadhana would spread through the people of the world through his (Lahiri’s) presence in the world.”
Lahiri Mahasaya reported that Mahavatar Babaji did not give his name or background, so Lahiri gave him the title “Mahavatar Babaji.” Many sadhus in India are called Babaji, and sometimes even “Babaji Maharaj”, which has caused confusion between Mahavatar Babaji and other sadhus with similar names.Lahiri Mahasaya had many meetings with Mahavatar Babaji, recounted in several books, including Paramhansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi,Yogiraj Shyama Charan Lahiri Mahasaya (Lahiri’s biography), and Purana Purusha: Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiri, among others.

Disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya

Several disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya also said they met Babaji. Through discussion with each other, and the fact that some of these encounters included two or more witnesses, they confirmed that the person they saw was the same sadhu that Lahiri called Mahavatar Babaji.
In 1894, at the Kumbha Mela in Allahabad, Sri Yukteswar Giri, a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, met Mahavatar Babaji. He was surprised by the striking resemblance between Lahiri Mahasaya and Mahavatar Babaji. Others who met Babaji also commented on the resemblance. It was at this meeting that Mahavatar Babaji instructed Sri Yukteswar to write the book that was to become Kaivalya Darshanam, or The Holy Science. Sri Yukteswar had two more meetings with Mahavatar Babaji, including one in the presence of Lahiri Mahasaya.
Swami Pranabananda Giri, another disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, also met Mahavatar Babaji in the presence of Lahiri Mahasaya, at Lahiri’s home. Pranabananda asked Mahavatar Babaji his age. Mahavatar Babaji responded that he was about 500 years old at that time.
Swami Keshabananda,a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, tells of meeting Mahavatar Babaji in the mountains near Badrinath around 1935, after he became lost wandering in the mountains. At that meeting, Pranabananda reported that Babaji gave him a message for Yogananda, that “I won’t see him this time, as he is eagerly hoping; but I shall see him on some other occasion.”
Other disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya who reported meetings with Mahavatar Babaji include Swami Kebalananda Giri and Ram Gopal Muzumdar, who recounted meeting Mahavatar Babaji and his sister, whom he called Mataji. In addition, a woman disciple of Trailanga Swami, Shankari Mata (also called Shankari Mai Jiew) met Mahavatar Babaji while visiting Lahiri Mahasaya.
